On November 14th, during the College Day lecture, I attended a talk by my fellow Honors College student, Li Jie-Yu, titled “Reporting Live from Bangkok – Sharing Overseas Correspondent Experiences.” I had met Jie-Yu previously in a small group. There was a period when I hadn’t seen her around the college, so I was surprised and very curious to hear that she was in Bangkok at that time. Without hesitation, I signed up to attend today’s College Day lecture.

Jie-Yu gave a detailed introduction, starting with her internship at the Central News Agency. She also explained the role of a foreign correspondent, emphasizing their job of “viewing local current events from a Taiwanese perspective.” Although the internship selection process was highly competitive and challenging, she honestly and humbly admitted that she wasn’t quite sure why she was lucky enough to be chosen. However, it was clear to all of us listening that her thorough preparation before the interview, the effort she put into reporting, and her resilience in facing setbacks—always choosing to reflect more deeply rather than give up—were key to her success. These efforts and hardships bore unique and rewarding fruits: during her first news assignment as an intern, she learned about the shocking news of Abe’s assassination even before many in Taiwan; she witnessed the emotional moments of Taiwan winning in international competitions and interviewed national athletes; and in Thailand, she overcame language barriers to personally discover the charm hidden among street vendors and temples.

As a newcomer stepping into the field of journalism, Jie-Yu sincerely shared many of the challenges she faced. She invited us to think together about possible solutions and then drew from the experiences of seasoned seniors—showing how, even after a harsh scolding, they gracefully resolved difficult dilemmas. Outside of work, Jie-Yu used her curious eyes to take us on a journey through Chinatown, filled with traditional Chinese characters, appreciate the intricate yet harmonious aesthetics of Thai-style addition, and savor memorable Michelin-starred cuisine. Through the eyes of a journalist, the audience got to see hidden corners of Thailand; through Jie-Yu’s eyes, we also experienced a truly unique internship life!
