On December 20, the Honors College held its signature event, the High Table Dinner. All college students and faculty dressed formally to celebrate this special evening together. Originating from the traditional long-table formal dinners at Oxford and Cambridge, the Honors College drew inspiration from this format, holding a High Table Dinner each semester. Distinguished guests are invited to share their experiences while students also learn proper dining and social etiquette. This time, Mr. Chang Tian-Li, Chairman of TAAZA Online Bookstore, was invited to speak.
On this memorable evening, many professors and mentors gathered with students. Dean of Student Affairs Lin Mei-Chun mentioned in her opening remarks that this year marks the seventh anniversary of the college’s founding. She expressed her excitement that, unaffected by the pandemic, this semester’s High Table Dinner would surely open theeyes of the first-year students. Dean Wang Chen-Che also emphasized in his introduction that the college is committed to interdisciplinary integration. All college activities are designed to encourage student interaction and collaboration with experts, thereby enhancing their soft skills.
Chairman Chang Tian-Li delivered a talk titled “Secrets Schools Won’t Teach You,” guiding students and faculty through a journey across topics such as investment, the operation of social organizations, and observing societal issues. He also highlighted several essential skills we should cultivate and recommended a number of excellent books for college students, encouraging us to gain valuable knowledge from them.
This year, students Zhan Yuan-Hao and Weng Jia-Xiang gave a musical performance featuring guitar renditions of Crowd Lu’s “Tomorrow Will Be Fine” and Jay Chou’s “Rice Field.” They also introduced playful instruments like the kazoo and bamboo cicada, adding a touch of childlike charm to the evening and providing a perfect, heartfelt conclusion to the High Table Dinner.
